The Different Types Of Security Systems May 19th, 2015
Choosing between the different types of security systems and accessories isn’t an easy decision. Searching through the marketplace, you’ve probably noticed different features and types of systems.
By learning the meaning of these security system details, from monitoring types to power sources, you can better prepare yourself for making the right decision.
Since all households have different kinds of spaces and valuables being protected, and varying budgets, you can use this guide to help figure out which security system and accessories are best for you and your home.
Monitored vs. Unmonitored Security Systems
Unmonitored— Also called a “local alarm system,” an unmonitored alarm system is the most common and basic alarm system. In this system, you have several sensors set up around the house, such as at doors and windows, and a loud alarm goes off alerting you of an intruder.
The blaring noise can scare off potential burglars and alert anyone in the house of a home invasion. There is no communication to emergency services with this type of device, and no way to alert a homeowner away from the premises.
Monitored— Monitored alarm systems work in a similar way to the local alarm system, but add an extra layer of protection via sending alerts to a monitoring center who are notified any time the sensors are tripped. Then, the control center alerts proper authorities depending on the danger at hand, whether it’s an intruder, a fire or a burst pipe.
This gives homeowners peace of mind if they are out of town and keeps them protected should they become incapacitated for some reason or unable to reach a phone to dial 911.
Hard-Wired vs. Wireless System
Choosing between a hard-wired and wireless system is also a decision for homeowners to consider. What this really comes down to is how big your system is going to be. But wireless is likely the best option.
A wireless system is connected by battery powered radio transmitters and is easily and cheaply installed, without the need of lining your house with wires. It’s typically more advantageous for the typical homeowner compared to hard-wired.
If you have giant home or property that needs protection within a large area, or to cover more than just your home, a hard-wired system may needed since wireless can sometimes limit the distances between sensors. Otherwise, you can install more than one system to avoid hard-wiring all of your components.
Battery Type
Batteries being the primary power source for all of your sensors and alarms when there’s an outage of some kind, you’ll want to make sure they are consistently charged.
A simple battery is when a device is powered only by a battery and has no back up energy available. With battery back up you’ll have that added help for when the power goes out due to storm or fire and still get alerted to a security issue.
All of Fortress Security’s alarm systems are powered by the main electric of the home or business and have a battery back up with 24-48 hours of power.
